“I Should’ve Been a Cowboy”

To the ones waiting on me:

I’ve never been more afraid to be in love

Than I am right now.

I’m a cowboy,

I look to the horizon

and see a way out.

I ride alone.

I don’t trust my company.

Loving hard, but leaving quick.

I’m not ill, it’s just how life has been.

If I get too close, I might get burned

A lesson more than five times learned.

So I’ll ride through town,

Maybe stay for some tea,

Then set out to new terrain.

Because I’m a cowboy

And I’m worried I might find someone just like me,

A dangerous way to love,

Because you only surrender you soul to the ones that leave,

And heaven has an expiration date when you love too deep.
